Potential problems in Egypt

Egypt is the largest destination for all direct foreign investment into Africa and we have many clients here, but it can be a volatile place to visit and do business. According to the FCDO, terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Egypt. Most attacks occur in the area of North Sinai and along the Libyan border, but a recent attack west of the Suez Canal shows that sporadic violence is possible anywhere.

If you are operating in Egypt, your first priority will be international Medical insurance. Outside of Cairo, hospitals are poor, so medical evacuation is recommended to ensure swift access to the best medical facilities.

Standard policies won’t include cover for injuries sustained from terrorism or political violence from one of the many street demonstrations that can flair up at any time. Depending where your people are based and where they travel, Personal Accident cover with terrorism and political violence inclusion may be important – something we can arrange for a few individuals or an entire workforce through Lloyd’s of London.

A significant number of cases of sexual assault against foreign nationals have been reported, many occurring in ‘safe’ environments such as hotel premises. Briefing your staff on sensible precautions before they visit is essential.

Egypt ranks fairly low on Transparency International’s Index and is also low on the World Bank Doing Business Index due to high levels of bureaucracy.

We can provide you with tailored Property insurance options to protect your vehicles, equipment and assets as you build your operation. We can also provide specialist Business Liability insurance to provide protection against contract issues, professional liability and Trade and Political Risk insurance to protect your investments from confiscation or loss should political changes affect your ability to operate in the future.
