Potential dangers in Iraq

We’ve been supporting clients in Iraq since the initial US-led invasion in March 2003 and throughout the ensuing years of IS insurgency. In that time we have provided robust tailored insurance for companies and humanitarian organisations involved in everything from aid and infrastructure, to journalism, security and logistics.

Although the Iraqi Prime Minister announced the defeat of Daesh (Islamic State (IS) in December 2017 and the country is beginning to rebuild its oil and gas sector, infrastructure and civil society, the terror threat here is still very high, and often targets foreign nationals.

Specialist Iraq insurance with war and terrorism cover is a crucial priority for anyone going to work there, in whatever capacity. You should also ensure you have robust security arrangements in place for accommodation and travel and keep up to date with the local and national situation.

There is a high-risk of hostage taking, so Kidnap and Ransom insurance is also advisable, providing you with security briefings before you travel and professional support should one of your people be taken.

Poor medical facilities and the high risk of injury and disease means that personal accident insurance and comprehensive health insurance in Iraq must include cover for emergency evacuation and repatriation. It’s important to note that standard insurance is invalid in Iraq, so even an everyday medical emergency like appendicitis or a road traffic accident would not be covered by ordinary policies, even though it may have no relation to the troubles there.

We can also provide cover to help you meet UN or UNHCR contractual obligations and provide you with DBA insurance if you are working on a US contract. We can look at other liability insurance and can also provide tailored cover for all of your vehicles, specialist equipment, cargoes or property.
