Dangers you might encounter in Central African Republic (CAR)

The British Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to all parts of CAR, except to the capital, Bangui, making specialist high-risk insurance essential for proper protection.

Political instability here means that tensions are high in the capital, Bangui, and across the country. It’s possible you will encounter armed patrols or roadblocks demanding money and there is particular concern about terrorist activity and inter-ethnic violence around the main airport in Bangui and in Bambari.

Medical facilities in CAR are poor. It’s vital you protect your people with robust Medical Evacuation insurance including specialist provision for terrorism and political violence. We also recommend that you take out Personal Accident insurance.

Recent kidnappings have included UN and humanitarian workers, so no matter what activity you may be involved with, professional briefings about avoiding risks before your people go is advisable. We can provide this as part of any Kidnap and Ransom insurance.

During the wet season, from May to November, the poorly maintained roads are hard to navigate. If you are travelling outside the main cities, use a four-wheel drive vehicle if possible.

We can also help you to protect property and specialist equipment from theft, damage from insurgency or natural disasters. And we can provide Trade and Political Risk insurance, protecting your investments from confiscation or loss should the changing political climate affect your operations in the future.
