The Global Peace Index identifies the scariest countries in 2023.

Headquartered in Sydney, the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) produces the Global Peace Index, the world’s leading measure of national peacefulness, ranking 163 countries according to their levels of peace.

1. Afghanistan
INDEX SCORE: 3.45
The least peaceful country in the world for the eighth consecutive year.

2. Yemen
INDEX SCORE: 3.35
Reduction in conflict still leaves Yemen in second place.

3. Syria
INDEX SCORE: 3.29
With over 60% of the population displaced, Syria continues to rank poorly.

4. South Sudan
INDEX SCORE: 3.22
The country continues to have high levels of internal conflicts.

5. Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
INDEX SCORE: 3.21
The DRC’s lowly positioning reflects decades of internal conflict and fragility.

 

6. Russia INDEX SCORE: 3.14

7. Ukraine INDEX SCORE: 3.04

8. Somalia INDEX SCORE: 3.03

9. Sudan INDEX SCORE: 3.02

10. Iraq INDEX SCORE: 3.00

11. Mali INDEX SCORE: 2.96

12. Central African Republic INDEX SCORE: 2.93
