Saving Turtles in Haiti

The Hawksbill Project take training to Haiti
Scott Eanes and his team at The Hawksbill Project recently travelled to Haiti to train a local project in how to safely capture and tag turtles in the water.
Working from boats at sea, the team trained local conservationists on how to capture juvenile Hawksbill Turtles, weigh them, take DNA samples and tag them to monitor their journeys.
An endangered species
Hawksbill Turtles are an endangered species. Understanding more about their bio data is vital in working out how to make informed decisions to aid their survival and protect the environments they live in.
Given they can live in an area spanning tens of thousands of miles, tagging also makes it possible to collaborate with projects in other locations and build up a bigger picture for the species as a whole.
Standard insurance invalid
Scott works with turtles all around the world, but this is the first time his work has taken him into an area where standard insurance is invalid. Scott told us:
“Bellwood Prestbury provided us with high-risk insurance which ensured my staff were properly protected throughout and we could concentrate on doing the job we came to do.”
