Uzbekistan insurance – Foreign Office advice
21 December 2010
With the Foreign Office advising against all but essential travel in certain areas, your Uzbekistan insurance needs to be carefully chosen to provide proper protection here.
The potential for border disputes, terrorism and civil unrest has led the British Foreign Office to advise against all but essential travel to the border areas in Uzbekistan. Insurance with standard policies would not be valid in those territories. Bellwood Prestbury can provide cover for emergency medical evacuation, specialist international travel insurance, global life and accident insurance and kidnap insurance that will protect you properly.
This Foreign Office advice is based on border disputes with neighbouring Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and the terrorist threat from Afghanistan. Terrorist networks are active within Uzbekistan itself and are known to see Western interests and individuals as legitimate targets.
Many intrepid travellers come to explore the centuries-old Great Silk Road that traverses this landlocked Central Asian state, giving rise to the ancient cities of Samarkand and Bukhara. Today, the capital is Tashkent and its economy is dependant on the country’s abundance of mineral deposits and its thriving cotton industry. Foreign investment is growing, and western mining companies are showing an interest, although some are still frustrated by the rigid control of the authoritarian Uzbek government.
Other significant safety risks in Uzbekistan are crime, road travel (due to poor maintenance and driving standards) and the country’s position on a seismic fault. It should also be noted that ordinary western Life Insurance policies may well not be adequate and, again, specialist Uzbekistan insurance is recommended for extended residency.
Insufficient facilities and training mean that the health care system is not equipped to deal with many serious emergencies in Uzbekistan. Insurance for foreigners should include comprehensive international health cover with medical evacuation and repatriation.
