Specialist high-risk insurance for UN contractors

24 April 2015

On Monday 20th April, a suicide bomber attacked a minibus full of UN workers headed for their office in the north-eastern city of Garowe in Somalia. The Islamic terrorist group, al-Shabab, has claimed responsibility for the explosion, which killed seven people, four of them staff of the UN children’s fund, UNICEF.

The violent activities of al-Shabab have long meant that Somalia has been a high-risk country to visit and anyone working or travelling there knows that specialist insurance is a priority.

High risk of terrorism and kidnapping

Current Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice is against all travel to Somalia including Somaliland except for the cities of Hargeisa and Berbera to which the FCO advise against all but essential travel. It describes the threat of terrorist attack and kidnapping as high, particularly for westerners and those working for western organisations.

Following an African Union campaign last year, al-Shabab holds less territory than it did, however, tragically their ability to commit atrocities has not abated.

Earlier this month, they shocked the world when they attacked a university campus in neighbouring Kenya, gunning down 148 students. And on 14th April the group also attacked a government ministry in Mogadishu, killing seventeen people.
