Oman to introduce mandatory health insurance from next year

31 August 2017

The stage is being set for the introduction of mandatory health insurance for private sector employees in the Sultanate from January 2018.

The new law will require employers to arrange medical treatment for expatriate employees by providing medical insurance through a third party insurer.

Although employers are not legally required to provide medical insurance to local Omani employees as they are already entitled to free medical treatment at government hospitals, local nationals will also be permitted to be eligible.

At present, government hospitals and clinics are overloaded with patients which is affecting the quality of service and is resulting in a long waiting periods for appointments or surgery.
