Kidnapping in Nigeria – on the increase?

19 October 2010

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Ogbonna Onovo, has described kidnapping in Nigeria as a threat to national security as figures suggest that there were around 830 reported cases of kidnap there over the last two years.

Kidnapping in Nigeria used to be concentrated on the Niger delta and tended to be targeted at executives from oil companies. Now the Inspector General of Police has said that kidnapping is prevalent in other areas, stating: “It cuts across all parts of the country, with the highest frequency in the South Eastern states.”
