Iraq insurance – are you properly covered?
18 June 2014
We are getting lots of contacts from people currently in Iraq – either directly, through their companies or loved ones at home – enquiring whether their insurance is valid given the turmoil the country has so quickly descended into.
All of our clients who have specialist Iraq insurance organised by us through Lloyd’s of London are at this point fully covered for injury, death or disability caused by civil unrest, be it terrorism, civil war or war. In the event of an injury those with appropriate policies can expect quality medical support and, if necessary, swift emergency medical evacuation to the nearest centre of excellence (possibly Dubai) followed by repatriation to their home country.
Obviously it is difficult to make generalisations, but in principle it is unlikely that people currently in Iraq with standard business or travel insurance are covered.
Is it possible to upgrade cover now?
We have had a number of enquiries from oil and gas workers in the oil fields in the south of the country as to whether it is possible to supplement their company insurance with personal policies providing greater level of protection.
Stuart Dix, our specialist Iraq insurance consultant explains: “It is possible to organise policies for people currently in Iraq, but the situation is changing almost by the hour. So far we have been able to accommodate all the requests we have had from companies and individual contractors.”
