Kidnap and Ransom Insurance in Africa
4 April 2013
Bellwood Prestbury were recently contacted by a firm of geologists undertaking projects in West Africa. The firm’s initial requirement was to insure themselves should they suffer an accident or sickness. Given the location of their projects, it was quickly established that the geologists were also at risk of being kidnapped. Therefore, a strong recommendation was made to include specialist kidnap and ransom insurance.
Coral Parfitt, Global Insurance Specialist at Bellwood Prestbury, explains “In order to provide the best possible insurance package for our clients’ activities and the risky location, the inclusion of a policy to cover both the costs of ransom reimbursement and the services of a negotiator was a necessity. Expats in West Africa continue to be a kidnap target for gangs driven by both financial and political gain. We are seeing an increased level of detainment situations, with mining and construction operations being specifically targeted”.
With the well publicised recent events in both Algeria and Nigeria more companies are turning to kidnap insurance experts to review and implement special contingency policies.
Coral continues “Bellwood Prestbury work with clients to design the structure and amount of cover necessary for their operations. For years numerous companies have included kidnap and ransom policies as standard when operating in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq; however, we are now seeing a heightened interest in providing this cover in Africa too. Cases of detainment appear to be becoming more frequent with an increasing severity resulting in longer detainments, higher ransoms and the potential for extreme levels of violence”.
