Defense Base Act Insurance for company in Afghanistan

8 November 2013

Bellwood Prestbury have arranged, at short notice, Defense Base Act Insurance (DBA) for an international transportation and logistics company which operates a fleet of vehicles delivering goods in Afghanistan. The company delivers military and other support related equipment to the US Army bases located in the country’s most hostile and remote parts.

The company approached Bellwood Prestbury as they needed DBA insurance in place quickly as their current policy was due to expire in a matter of days. Bellwood Prestbury acted immediately and were able to secure comprehensive insurance cover through their global insurance network.

Bellwood Prestbury is recommending that contractors and subcontractors working on US Government contracts consult with a DBA insurance expert to ensure they fully understand changes to the US Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) existing insurance arrangement. The former arrangement, which ended on the 30th September 2013, was an exclusive pre-negotiated DBA insurance programme with US insurer CNA. As a result of the change, contractors awarded USACE contracts from the 1st October 2013 are now free to approach any insurer offering DBA insurance.

Bellwood Prestbury are experts at providing international insurance for companies operating in war zones and high-risk areas, and work with authorised DBA insurance providers to arrange Defense Base Act insurance for many workforces operating outside of the US, especially in Afghanistan and Iraq.
