Syria was once the centre of the Islamic Empire and it has a turbulent history of invasion and occupation. Today, it is home to a diverse range of ethnic and religious groups, but is again seeing turbulent times – and the current unrest makes it imperative you do not visit without appropriate Syria insurance.
There have been violent disturbances in urban centres throughout Syria, where live gunfire from security forces has caused injuries and deaths. Avoid large gatherings and if caught up in a crowd, keep a low profile and leave the area as soon as you safely can. Do not film or photograph any gathering, keep your passport with you for identification purposes, and do not openly criticise the Syrian government or the president – if plainclothes policemen overhear, they may take action against you or those you are talking to.
In view of the unpredictable security situation, take extreme care when travelling. Roads may be blocked during disturbances or demonstrations and major routes have security force checkpoints. At some land border crossing points into Jordan, north-east Lebanon and Iraq, access has been affected or completely closed.
Medical treatment is not expensive but standards vary greatly. Given the increased safety risks, comprehensive international health insurance in Syria is essential, with medical evacuation recommended.
