Securing specialist Somalia insurance should be central to preparations for visiting this war torn and largely ungoverned country. Due to ongoing armed conflict, widespread violent crime, piracy and the specific targeting of westerners for hostage, travel to Somalia is strongly discouraged without expert advice and the strictest security precautions.

POTENTIAL DANGERS IN SOMALIA

In 1991 the regime of President Barre was overthrown by opposing clans who have since been fighting each other, leaving most of the country ungoverned, unfed and lawless.A coalition government has been set up, however its authority has little effective reach and its forces are engaged in a fierce military campaign against al-Qaeda backed insurgents.

Tragically disease is widespread and healthcare nearly nonexistent. With a view to this, and the high risk of injury here, robust international health insurance in Somalia is critical, as is cover for emergency evacuation by air ambulance to another country.

Off the coast, the notorious Somali pirates present a serious danger and anyone involved in shipping in these waters should take appropriate precautions including piracy insurance. Somalia is not a safe place for westerners to visit and those that do must take their security seriously at all times.

Beside the risks of becoming caught up in gunfire, mortar bomb attacks and shelling, be warned that Islamist terrorist groups, like al-Shabaab see westerners as a legitimate target for kidnap, including those delivering the food aid on which a third of the population depends.

Kidnap and ransom insurance in Somalia might be a wise precaution as most governments support a policy similar to the UK which is ‘against making substantive concessions to hostage takers’.
