It is essential to have specialist Congo insurance before you travel to, or begin operations in this lush, central African nation. Although the Republic of Congo has been largely peaceful since 2003, there remain pockets of rebel activity, and poor infrastructure and healthcare can also present problems for the visitor.

POTENTIAL DANGERS IN THE REPUBLIC OF CONGO

This former French colony is often referred to as Congo-Brazzaville to distinguish it from its neighbour – the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Dense impenetrable jungle covers 80% of its territory, with most of its sparse population living in the south, either in Brazzaville or Pointe Noire or in communities along the railway that connects these two cities.

Offshore oil, while bringing much needed foreign investment into the country, was a major factor in the civil war, with different ethnic groups fighting for control of revenues. Although a far less hazardous prospect for visitors than the DRC, the Republic can still present problems and specialist Congo insurance may well be required. Throughout the Republic of Congo, healthcare is extremely limited and cover for emergency evacuation by air ambulance is essential as there is little or no treatment available for serious medical emergencies.

Along the routes that connect the two main cities banditry is common and travel should only be undertaken with security measures. There have also been armed attacks on boats on the Ubangi river. Travel to the Pool region is ill-advised due to the risk of banditry and armed activity by rebels. Security in Likouala province is precarious due to a large influx of refugees from DRC.

While crime is relatively low in the two main cities, it’s wise not to carry valuables or walk about after dark. Your Congo travel insurance needs to provide adequate cover in the event of robbery. Tropical and waterborne disease are prevalent throughout the country. There have been recent outbreaks of cholera and polio, and a number of reports of Ebola. Get the right vaccinations and health advice before arrival, as well as taking out comprehensive international health insurance.
