An extraordinarily beautiful country, Central African Republic offers amazing scenery and wildlife. However it is underdeveloped and the people are extremely poor. Crime rates are high – theft and robbery are common. Do not carry valuables or wear jewellery in public places. Avoid poorer areas of town and do not go out alone at night. And be sure that your Central African Republic insurance adequately protects you against theft and loss.
Medical facilities are extremely limited and have been affected by strikes; medicines are scarce and sanitary conditions are poor. You will need to ensure that your Central African Republic insurance includes cover for medical evacuation by air ambulance.
Malaria, meningitis and waterborne diseases are common. Bilharzia makes swimming unsafe everywhere. Use only boiled or bottled water and avoid ice in drinks. Be aware that food purchased from local street vendors may not be hygienically prepared or stored.
Further outside the capital, there are frequent incidents involving rebel activity, armed attacks, banditry and kidnappings, particularly along the borders of Sudan, Chad and Cameroon, where many villages are controlled by armed mercenaries.
Local travel can be difficult. There have been reports of vehicles being fired upon in remote areas and you may come across illegal roadblocks where you are forced to pay in money or valuables to be permitted to pass. During the wet season, from May to November, the poorly maintained roads are hard to navigate. Use a four-wheel drive vehicle if possible and take a supply of fuel and provisions with you.
As with many African countries, the rate of HIV/AIDS infection is high in Central African Republic.
